How do I use QR codes for school fundraisers?

How big should a banner QR code be for a school entrance?
Parents scan while waiting a few steps away. A code about 20 cm (8 inches) square on a banner at adult eye height works. On a take-home flyer, 3 cm (1.2 inches) is plenty.
