Static vs dynamic QR codes: what's the difference?
Every QR code is a picture that stores a small piece of text, usually a web address. The only real difference between static and dynamic is where that address lives: inside the picture itself, or on a page that the picture points to.
That one difference decides whether you can change the link later, whether you can count scans, and whether anyone has to keep a service running for your code to work.
Static: the link is baked in
A static code stores your address directly in the pattern. Scanning it takes the phone straight to that address, with nothing in between.
That makes static codes free to create and impossible to switch off. The trade-offs are that you can never change where the code goes, you can't count scans, and a long address makes a dense, harder-to-scan pattern.
Dynamic: the code points to a page you control
A dynamic code stores a short address on a service. When someone scans it, the service sends them on to your link. Because the service sits in the middle, you can change the destination later and count how many people scanned.
The short address also makes a simpler pattern, which is often easier to scan. The cost is that somebody has to keep the service running. Many services charge a subscription for that, and several say their dynamic codes stop working if you stop paying.
Which one should you choose
Ask two questions: will this link ever change, and do you want to know how often it's scanned?
- Choose static for a link that will never change and a code you don't need to measure, such as a personal project.
- Choose dynamic for anything you print in quantity: menus, signs, packaging, flyers, and business cards. Reprinting is the expensive part.
- Choose dynamic for anything tied to something that changes, like a listing, a schedule, or an offer.
How ThreeDollarQRCode works
ThreeDollarQRCode makes dynamic codes for $3, paid once. Your code opens a page on our site that shows the address it goes to, with a button to continue. You get a private edit link to change that address any time, and your order page shows a basic scan count.
Like any dynamic code, yours works through our site, so it works as long as the site runs. We commit to at least 90 days' notice before any shutdown.
A warning about free dynamic codes
Some free dynamic codes stop working after a trial ends or a scan limit is reached. Before you print a thousand of anything, check what happens to the code if the plan ends. A code that dies after printing is the most expensive kind.
Questions
Can I turn a static code into a dynamic one later?
No. The pattern itself is different, so you would make a new code and print it again.
Do dynamic codes scan more easily?
Often, because they store a shorter address, which makes a simpler pattern. Print quality and size still matter most.
Are dynamic codes less safe?
Not by themselves, but the service controls where the code goes, so use one you trust. Ours shows visitors the destination before they leave.
