QR codes for authors, books and bookmarks

A reader who has just finished your book is the best customer you will ever have, and the last page is where to meet them. A code on a bookmark, the last page or the back cover can open the next book in the series, a sample chapter or a mailing list.

Your links change with every release. A dynamic code lets the same printed bookmarks point at your newest title.

This is a dynamic QR code: $3 once, and you can change where it points at any time without reprinting. How that works

What should an author's QR code link to?

One clear next step. Readers do not follow five links.

Can I put a QR code on a book cover?

Yes. Most authors place it on the back cover or the last page, not the front. Keep the code at least 2 cm (0.8 inch) square on a flat, matte area. If your printer uses a glossy cover coating, test a proof, because glare can interfere.

Are bookmarks a good use of a QR code?

Yes. A bookmark travels with the reader, costs little to print, and stays in the book. Print the code, a short line about what it opens, and your name. Order a proof first so you can check the print.

How do I use QR codes at a book signing?

A small sign beside you with a code to your mailing list saves readers from typing an address, and a stack of bookmarks lets them take it home. Offer a free story or chapter to make signing up worth it.

Questions

Can I change the link when I release a new book?

Yes. Update the edit link and the same bookmarks open the new book.

Does the code work in print-on-demand books?

Yes, as part of the interior or cover file. Check the proof.

Will it still work in ten years?

As long as our site runs, with at least 90 days' notice before any shutdown. For permanent printing, also include a short web address in text.

Do I need to be technical?

No. Pay $3, choose a link, and download the code.

How many codes should I buy?

One per book or one for the whole series, depending on whether you want separate counts.
