QR codes for product manuals, appliances and quick start guides
Printed manuals are long, hard to search and out of date the day a product changes. A small code on the box or the product opens the current manual, a setup video, or a replacement-parts page instead.
For makers and small sellers, this cuts support emails: the answer is one scan away. Because the code is dynamic, a new firmware or a new video does not mean new packaging.
This is a dynamic QR code: $3 once, and you can change where it points at any time without reprinting. How that works
What should a manual QR code link to?
Put the question people actually ask first.
- A 60-second setup video, not a 40-page PDF.
- A troubleshooting page that starts with the most common problem.
- The full manual as a link further down.
- How to contact support, and what to have ready.
Where should the code go on the product and box?
On the quick start card inside the box, on the back or underside of the product, and on the inside lid of the box. A code on the outer box is for shoppers, so point that one at the product page.
Keep the code at least 2 cm (0.8 inch) square on a flat, matte area. Avoid curved plastic and textured finishes.
Can I print one code for every model I sell?
Yes, if the page asks which model. Many sellers prefer one code per product line, so each code opens the right manual directly, and scan counts show which products generate the most questions.
What happens when the product is updated?
Change the page the code opens, or use the edit link to point it at a new address. Customers who bought an older unit still get the current version unless you keep an archive page for them.
Example signs
Each example code opens threedollarqrcode.com. Your code can open any page you choose.
Questions
Do customers need an app to read the manual?
No. They scan with the phone camera and read it in the browser.
Can I print the code on a sticker?
Yes. Use a durable sticker rated for the product's surface.
What about customers without a smartphone?
Include the web address and a phone number in text beside the code.
Can I see how many people scan?
Yes, on your order page.
Is it cheaper than printing manuals?
For long manuals, usually yes, and it never goes out of date.
Is there a monthly fee?
No. $3 once per code.
