My QR code stopped working: how to find out why

A code that worked yesterday and fails today usually has one of four causes: the service behind it ended, the link it points to broke, the print was damaged, or the phone has changed.

The quickest way to tell is to check the code, then the link.

Did the subscription or trial end?

Many dynamic codes depend on a paid plan or a trial, and some services stop redirecting when it ends. Log in to the service that made the code and check the plan.

If the code was made on a free trial, it may have expired.

Did the link it points to stop working?

Scan the code and see whether the page loads. If it opens an error, the web page it points to was removed or moved. For a dynamic code, change the destination to the correct page.

Is the print damaged?

Fading, scratches, water or a sticker over the code can break it. Compare the code with the original and replace it if it is worn.

How do I avoid this next time?

Use a dynamic code whose service does not depend on a recurring plan, keep a record of who owns the code, and test it on a few phones whenever you reprint.

Questions

Can I recover an expired QR code?

Only if the service lets you renew or reactivate it. Otherwise you need a new code and a new print.

Is a static code safer from this?

A static code does not depend on a service, so it cannot expire, but you cannot change it.

How can I tell if it is static or dynamic?

A dynamic code opens a short address on a service first. A static one opens the destination directly.

What does ThreeDollarQRCode do?

It is $3 once. There is no plan to expire, and we commit to at least 90 days' notice before any shutdown.
