Blurry or pixelated QR code: how to get a sharp print
A QR code made of tiny squares looks perfect on screen and blurry on paper when the image is too small or stretched. The edges of the squares need to be crisp for the camera to read them.
The fix is almost always the file format and how you place it.
Why is my QR code blurry when I print it?
A small PNG scaled up gets soft edges. Printing a small image large magnifies each pixel, and the squares blur.
What file should I use for printing?
Use an SVG, which is made of shapes and stays sharp at any size. If you need a PNG, export a large one (at least 1000 pixels wide) and place it at the printed size without stretching.
- Do not drag a corner to enlarge a small image.
- Do not screenshot a code and print the screenshot.
What printer settings help?
Print at the highest quality and avoid 'fit to page' scaling that blurs the edges. Use matte paper and black ink on white.
How can I check before a big print run?
Print one copy at actual size, scan it with two phones, and only then order a batch.
Questions
Is SVG better than PNG?
For print, yes. It stays sharp at any size.
Can I fix a blurry code in an editor?
Not reliably. Regenerate it at a larger size.
Why does a photo of my code not scan?
Photos add blur and angle. Use the original file.
Does our free generator give SVG?
Yes, you can download a PNG or SVG.
What about a code on a banner?
Export as SVG and place it without stretching.
