QR code not scanning on iPhone: what to check

The iPhone camera reads QR codes by itself, with no app. When it does not, the cause is usually the setting, the distance or the code, not the phone.

Work through these in order. Most problems are fixed in the first three.

Is the iPhone's QR scanning turned on?

Open Settings, then Camera, and make sure Scan QR Codes is on. Then open the Camera app (not a photo from your library) and point it at the code.

Are you too close or too far?

Move the phone back until the whole code and a bit of white around it are in the frame. Most failures come from standing too close.

Is there glare or low light?

Shiny paper, laminate and screens cause reflections. Tilt the phone or the code to remove glare, and turn on more light if the room is dim.

Is the code itself the problem?

A code that is too small, blurry, low in contrast or missing its white border may not read on any phone. Test it on a second phone to see whether it is the code or yours.

See our guide on why a QR code will not scan for the full list.

Questions

Why does my iPhone say no usable data found?

The code may be damaged, blurry or not a valid QR code. Try again closer, in better light, or on another phone.

Do I need an app to scan on iPhone?

No. The built-in Camera app reads QR codes.

Why does the camera see the code but nothing opens?

The code may hold text that is not a web address, or the page may not load. Check your connection and try the link again.

Does it work on older iPhones?

QR scanning has been built into the iPhone camera for years. Very old phones may need an update.

Why do codes scan on Android but not iPhone?

Usually a camera setting, distance or glare issue. Try the steps above.
