QR code not scanning on Android: what to try

Most Android phones read a QR code through the camera or Google Lens. If yours will not, the fix is usually quick.

Here is what to check, from the simplest to the less common.

Is your camera set up to scan?

Open the Camera app and point it at the code. If nothing happens, open Settings, then the Camera settings, and look for an option to scan QR codes. On some phones you open Google Lens instead.

Is the code too small, too close or too far?

Keep the whole code and a white border in view. Move closer or farther until the focus box locks on, and tap the code to help it focus.

Is there glare?

Glossy prints and screens reflect light. Change the angle, or turn on the flashlight only if the glare is not from the light itself.

Does the page not open after scanning?

If the camera reads the code but nothing loads, check your signal and try again. A slow mobile connection or a broken page can look like a scanning problem.

Questions

Which app should I use on Android?

The built-in camera or Google Lens works on most phones. A separate scanner is rarely needed.

Why does my camera not detect QR codes?

The feature may be off, the code may be unclear, or the app may need an update.

Can a case or screen protector cause trouble?

A smudged lens or a cloudy protector over the camera can blur the image. Wipe the lens.

Why is the focus box not locking?

Move closer or farther and hold steady.

Is it the code or the phone?

Try a second phone. If both fail, the code is the problem.
